Let’s Talk Air Purifiers

What Do All of These Air Purification Terms Actually Mean?

When it comes to your home, it’s important that you keep it clean. That means cleaning for dust and dirt, sterilizing to get rid of bacteria, and general cleaning and maintenance to ensure that everyone who lives under your roof can live safe, happy, and healthy lives, right? But what about the air that you breathe? What measures do you take to ensure that the air that flows through your home is clean, safe, and free of toxins?

That’s precisely where air purifiers come into play! But then again, what exactly do air purifiers do? More importantly, what do all of those different air purification terms actually mean? Let’s talk about it!

What Is An Air Purifier?

First, let’s get down to basics. What exactly is an air purifier? Well, an air purifier is a specialized system – picture an air conditioner or a dehumidifier – designed to pull toxins out of the air within a space, and ensure that only clean, pure air is cycles through the system and disburses back into your space.

However, not all air purifiers do the same thing! And that’s exactly where these different air purification terms can come into play.

HEGA, HEPA, MCS, VOCS?

To make this easier, let’s begin with filtration. Air purifiers essentially filter dust, dirt, debris, and toxins out of the air, right? Well, each air purifier does that in a different way. For instance, HEGA and HEPA machines take advantage of UV light to kill germs right in their tracks as soon as air enters into the machine.

These types of machines are perfect for people with MCS – or Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. For instance, a High Efficiency Gas Absorption (HEGA) filter like the Austin Air Junior Allergy Machine, or a strong Highly Efficient Particulate Arresting (HEPA) filter would be ideal for someone with severe allergies.

But what about VOCs? VOCs stand for “volatile organic compounds.” You might be familiar with the term if you’ve purchased household paint! You’ll often find a gallon of paint that has “No VOCs!” listed on the label – and that’s because VOCs can be harmful to breathe.

Now, there are actually specific air purification systems designed explicitly to remove VOCs from the air. For instance, the Airpura C600-DLX performs exceptionally well at removing VOCs and other airborne chemicals from the air. Typically, these types of machines are marketed towards those who suffer from severe allergies or other symptoms related to asthma. The C600-DLX is ideal for homes, workplaces, and other locations in close proximity to manufacturers that release these harmful chemicals.
